Born in the Dominican Republic, Oscar de la Renta worked in Europe through the 1950s when French fashion was at such a pivotal point first as a designer for Balenciaga, and later as assistant designer to Antonio Castillo at Lanvin-Castillo, Paris from 1961-1963. In the 1960s, he brought what he had learned working at the couture house to New York, and eventually started his own label, which, in a way, was the true "American couture house" of its time
